Ditto on TH44's load data with BP. If interested, the late Paul Mathews had a great tip for clean shooting with BP. While lots of guys will put a grease (BP lube) wad between 2 card wads and get some assistance with this, Paul found that putting a wax/paper disk on the slightly "1/10" compressed powder", then grease cookie, then wad)s) and bullet, the fouling would be very soft and allow 5 to 10 shots without any dry fouling buildup.
Now, he also had some advice on different fouling traits:
hard fouling close to the breech, but the rest of the barrel clear, means grease 'cookie" too hard. Fouling clear up to almost the muzzle, but fouling at the muzzle, not enough grease cookie. Fouling full length of the barrel's bore, not a good black powder grease.
The fouling in the bore after 5 to 10 shots, should be wiped clean with one DRY patch. If not, adjust the lube disk's components, harder, softer, more or less.
There should be a lube star on the muzzle after each shot.(lube star created matching the rifling grooves)
I have used his formula for BP ctg. guns and my modern large bore, .45 and .50 cal smokeless rifles with cast bullets and it is a great one - and works well for both.
60% Beeswax, 40% Vaseline. I have tried this or similar mixtures with paraffin wax and olive oil with poor results.
The Beeswax or Vaseline can be adjusted to gain stiffness or make it softer.
The beeswax should be of good quality.
Our own Captain Curl has used this recipe with bee-brood foundation cut in to disks as the barrier between powder and lube disk and it works well, too. This was Paul's suggestion in a later book.
Good luck.

Thanks Daryl - some great information! As mentioned in my Purdey post, the rifles came with their brass wax wad forming plates, so I will be able to try the Vaseline / beeswax combination you have mentioned.

Chris
