It is a typical 1920s German “Wehrmannsgewehr” = serviceman target rifle, used for military style target shooting and paramilitary training during the interwar years. The Versailles treaty prohibited production of 8x57 ammo and rifles, even in private ownership. Additionally many local target shooting ranges did not allow the use of full power or jacketed bullet loads. So many miliary Gewehr 98 rifles were converted to single shots and rebarreled to take the then popular 8.15x46R “Schützenpatrone” = target cartridge. As this cartridge was commonly reloaded with pre-packed powder charges and lead bullets, shooting such loads was allowed. This made for rather cheap training too.
