I note this Luger does not have the 'button' on the back of the grip needing to be depressed for the Luger to fire.

The German military Lugers, the Pistole 08,the Lange Pistle 08 and the navy Pistole 04, never had that grip safety of the earlier Luger models like the Swiss models 1900, 1900/06, 1906/29 and some commercial models.
Though intended originally for the field artillery, these long barreled, shoulder stocked pistols were rarely issued to them. In late 1915 the German military had a better idea. A bulky 32 shot snail drum magazine was developed to fit these pistols. Subsequently these pistols, each one with five such high capacity magazines in addition to the three regular 8 shot ones, were issued to selected infantry units like Sturmtruppen for fighting in the trenches of WW1. Though semi-auto only, these "pistols" gave a lot of short range firepower. In this use they were the tactical predecessors of the submachine gun. What would you prefer for fighting in the trenches of WW1: A shoulder stocked, 6 shot Webley revolver with a short bayonet or one of these quick reloadable 32 shot shoulder stocked pistols? The German army tried in vain to convert these pistols to full auto. Instead, they introduced Hugo Schmeisser's MP 18, the first operational true submachine gun, to replace it at the end of the great war. Apparently the allies feared these long barreled, stocked, high capacity pistols, as there was a provision in the Versailles "peace treaty": Germans were not allowed to make or own pistols with barrels of 10 cm or longer and/or calibers of 9mm or larger. Today, these pistols and the snail drum magazines even more so are very rare in Germany.
