MotelAlpha, Most front sights will be fitted flush with the muzzles, however when you see the sight set back from the muzzles it is usually done to facilitate a place for a flip over gloaming sight. This is a is also called a night sight. In the pictures below the flip-up gloaming sight is folded down into a recess in the back of the front sight, but in many cases the sight is mounted with the recess in the muzzle end of the sight, so the sight seems mounted back from the muzzles.
