Basic question for those who build double rifles

Hi All,

I'm new here (see the # of posts!!) and have a question which I'm afraid may seem really basic. When people make a breech from raw steel stock, do they harden it once done? I would assume yes as there are some strong forces against the breech, but don't know! I'm just being curious as these things interest me.
