Philippines Outfitter Jay Carlson Gored By Water Buffalo

Published: January - 2008

Remember Jay Carlson, the young, entrepreneurial PH who founded a company called Mindoro Safaris several years ago to open hunting in The Philippines? Well, the big news is Carlson was gored by a buffalo last month and has been in serious medical condition for several weeks. At this writing, we have been told he has been transported by medical jet from Manila to his home town of Sag Harbor, New York.

The original e-mail we received about Carlson's injury was from an individual by the name of Elon Ramon Elize. The e-mail had the return address of Mindoro Safaris. The e-mail contains the most detailed account of Carlson's injury that we have received to date. It indicates, in broken English, that Carlson was pursuing an injured cow buffalo that had attacked a boy in a nearby village. The buffalo charged in thick brush, goring Carlson in the side and dragging him some distance before throwing him into a tree, then pushing him into the ground. The e-mail went on to say Carlson is in bad condition in a doctor's office, maybe not to live.

On receipt of the e-mail, we tried repeatedly to reach Carlson to determine if he needed the assistance of friends and former clients. When we couldn't reach him, we turned to American Embassy officials in Manila, who also were not able to reach him or determine his whereabouts and physical condition.

At this writing in mid-December, we are reasonably confident Carlson is in the care of his family in Sag Harbor. In the interest of privacy, we have ceased our efforts to reach him and suggest that well-wishers and formers clients do the same. We know his office is currently returning deposit checks for this season and trying to square all accounts. One subscriber, Dean Grommet, told us at press time he had already received his deposit back.

Clearly, Carlson was very seriously injured. Our advice to those wishing to reach him and convey their support is to send an e-mail. You may also........(continued)
