I would guess at the early 1870s. At least Adolf Zimmer in the 1877 edition of his book "Die Jagd-Feuergewehre Der Neuzeit" = The Hunting-Firearms of Modern Times recommended such bore rifles using shortened shotgun cases for German hunting. He dismissed those "New-fangled, small bore military cartridges with light bullets and large powder charges" as useless for hunting and outright unsportsmanlike, though he admitted their very flat trajectory. He was talking about such "small bores" like the 11.15x60R aka .43 Mauser. He also favored the Lefaucheux action and stock shape of this gun.
