I've converted a No. 1 from 45-70 to 45-100 (the 2.6" case); the 45-100 gives you a good rimmed case with about 9% more volume than a 458wm. The 45-100 will be cheaper to feed (hand loads only, of course) using the Starline brass and the volume is just right for nitro powders to get 2150fps with the 500 grain bullets without needing filler. As already mentioned, the barrel would need to be set back a little bit to get rid of the belt section of the original chamber. I could have easily rechambered but went with a new barrel to get the right twist rate for the heavier bullets. Pac-Nor sells barrels contour matched to your sample and pre-fit for the No. 1 which cuts down on the work involved. How much do you want to spend on the project?
