Before doing anything to the stock, dessicate the oil accumulated over many years. Put a strong light bulb close and a drip can under the stock. You should do this to the area around the receiver, as it soaks up a lot of oil over years. DON'T let it drip onto the light bulb!!! Have the stock pointed down.
