Just Back from Range With New Acquisition

Yesterday I managed to pick up the serial # 1830 New Haven Connecticut Winchester Model 70, 30GOVT06 (stamped on the barrel) with 24" barrel, in as-new condition. This is one of the rifles of my late friend Sandy, a retired S/Sgt. RCMPolice.

It had a backwards mounted Lyman Aperture sight on it, as received, hence the unsightly divot in the stock on the left side. Sandy had a local friend and gun smith, blue and refinish the stock, oh well.

Last night I poured over the books, and remembering Sandy saying this particular M70 liked 165's, I loaded up some 165 SST's with H414 and Fed 210 primers.

Below is the first target I shot, using the factory semi-buckhorn sight with small bead front sight - holding the forend, resting the back of my hand on the BR.

I used an old 3-postion 200 yard target from the 70's than I've used a number of times, getting shot up a bit.

I fired 3 rounds into the bank to get a rough elevation setting for the rear sight. It was a good 1 1/2 feet high for the first shot. After adjusting, 2 more and I couldn't tell where they fell in the gravel- looked like a big hole.

1st 3 rounds on target are the top 3, with black cloth behind to show the holes. 3 shots in 1.798". I loosened the rear sight leaf, lowered it and fired the last 4 into 1.632". I am so tickled with it's accuracy, so far.

A friend of mine has an almost new in box 4X Lyman Alaskan from close to that era and it is going on this rifle- or I may just leave it with only the open sights - I have not decided yet.

I absolutely love this rifle!
