There was just an article in " Rifleshooter" on this very topic--it recommmended anything from a Schmidt/Bender 4 to 16 to a Leupold VX-III--8x32---depending on what you feel comfortable with--

I have several 6.5 to 30 VX-III Leupolds that work well however I must admit the S/B's and Swarovski's are noticably better, at least to me, when you get out past 5-600 yards or more--IMHO..On several of my hunting riggs that I use for antelope, deer and elk I use the VX-III in 4.5-14--I really like this the best for an all around scope but I am NOT target shooting with them --merely longer shots during hunting seasons..I have a S/B -4x16 on a Cooper 6/284 I use for praire dogs--awesome scope..again most shots are between 200 and 400 yards..
