Yes, I have heard of zinc and steel weights that are being called for by the anti-gun elements of our government.

I’ve been seeing lots of zinc wheel weights lately. They do not cause a problem to my casting, because they pop to the surface and are skimmed away with the clips, before they get hot enough to begin melting.

It's "bad for the environment”. Never mind that lead is elemental, and we got it out of the ground in he 1st place. It’s a naturally occurring element, and it’s “part of nature” so it’s OK if it’s in the ground.

This is not really a valid argument. I’ve heard people make the same point about used motor oil. I think you will agree that pouring used motor oil on the ground is detrimental. The same can be said about oil spills. It came from the ground, but it does not belong on the surface freely interacting with living things.

The fact is, elemental lead quickly generates a coating of lead oxide. The coating prevents further chemical reaction by insulating the lead from the environment. Lead so encapsulated will cause no problems unless it is disturbed, and usually not even then, as the oxide coating will quickly regenerate.

Good arguments are usually lost on anti-gunners and their allies in the press, but bad arguments are seized upon and used against us.
