Since Mausers and other bolt-action rifles generally lack half-cock provisions, I'm not sure its a great idea having your striker down on a loaded round.

On a rifle with no quiet or convenient safety, I'm inclined to leave the bolt up behind a loaded chamber when game might be expected. The rifle can be slung muzzle down behind the left shoulder and the catridge won't fall out. As previously mentioned in this thread, this is a very quick carry to get into action, pivoting the rifle with your left hand on the fore end. When things get warm, quarry-wise, I push the handle of our '98 forward and down into the first notch, where it will stay with reasonable safety. From there the bolt can be closed quietly and quickly enough for sambar hunting. Don't try this with an old Sako Finnbear, though: if for some reason the trigger is pulled while the bolt is in the notch, the striker will drop when you lock up. Fortunately, the Sako has a good sliding safety.
