Thanks for the replies.

The buffalo had a spread of 51.5" (131cm) from tip to tip.

the measurement of the horns were
17.75" around the bases
and 32.5" curve.
(biggest side)

Unfortunately, the story behind the hunt does not do the animal justice.

It was coming to late afternoon, after driving for most of the day, when my mate and i were driving to our camp where we normally set up at. The buffalo were coming out onto the flood plains when my mate pointed out the buffalo with a small herd of about 7 cows, some 3 hundred metres away. We drove closer to to within about 80 metres before the bull started to chase it's small herd up. In fact if the bull didn't come behind the herd and just kept trotting ahead i would never had the opportunity to take the shot.

My first shot was a poor one. I struck the animal about half way along his rib cage. I wasn't very happy about the shot and followed up with a quick shot this time hitting the animal just behind the shoulder, although maybe a little hight for a "boiler room" shot. The two 550 grain woodleighs appeared to have very little effect, so i knew my shots were poor.

The Third shot, I made sure and was a good hit and the bull stumbled and began to walk. He only walked for another 30 metres with his head down, before turning to face us. As we got in close, the bull lifted his head high to have a sniff and i took the opportunity to put him down with another 550 grain to the head.

I was a little disappointed with my shooting but you can't(well I can't) be dead eye dick 100% of the time. I guess if the buffalo were a soft animal and fell over, first shot everytime, it wouldn't be as much fun.

The woodleighs are a great bullet (IMO) and it was only my shooting that let the bullet down, not the other way around

It was a good size animal.

I am (or was) very fortunate to have been living in Arnhem Land for a few years to enable me to do this hunting.

I still have some of the contacts (Traditional owners) but my family and working life make it hard to get out to those same areas as i now reside in Darwin (hopefully that might change in the next 12 months or so).

Cheers
