The leather has chemical residue from tanning. It also retains moisture. Oiling the leather is not a good idea as the cartridges get greasy. Sealing the leather with bee's wax preserves it (standard practice in the heat of India) & the wax should not rub off on to the ammo. The final point is still what 500 Nito says - you should not store ammo in leather pouch or loops.
