450 Marlin in a bolt action rifle
      28/12/07 03:42 PM

I have a French MAS 36 rifle that I would like to sporterize. I have been thinking of the 450 Marlin cartridge for this rifle and a stock similar to a Savage 99 or Ruger No.1. The 7.5 MAS cartridge was loaded to 50,000 psi presure so I think 450 Marlin loads with 400 gr. bullets could be stepped up to 2200 fps safely. What do you think? Would the recoil be to much for a medium weight sporter?

Another issue is there is no safety on the MAS 36 and I have not been able to come up any kind of adaption. A cross-bolt safety in the trigger guard will not work because this rifle uses the trigger sear as a bolt stop. Such a safety would not allow removal of the bolt. Any ideas? I have kept the bolt handle in the up position or the chamber empty until I am ready fire. This has worked so far.
