I am a victim of "cannon cocker syndrome" (otherwise known as "artillery ear") to the point that my right ear is pretty well hopeless and my left ear only marginally better. Consequently, I use two hearing aids and on the rifle range use muffs with built-in amplifiers. They were recommended to me by a fellow ex-Marine friend, who is also a game warden and who uses them on duty.
This summer I spent about one hour a day five days a week rowing five miles on Kentucky Lake, which is near my home. Facing backwards in a rowing shell and unable to monitor obstructions (such as fishing boats) in my path led me to rely on my ears for teltale noises. Unwilling to risk submerging my several thousand dollars worth of electronics in the hearing aids, I cast about for a substitute, and what did I find but the Game Ear, which fits like ear plugs and cost $66.00 a pair. For my purposes, they work as well as their expensive counterparts, and are adjustable, so my right ear is more amplified than my left.
I have yet to try them in the woods, but I'm satisfied that they will be a big improvement.
