I've added a couple of cool Gun Dog websites.

Hunting Dog Training

German Short-haired Pointers

If you have a gun dog, check out these two MSN communities. Hunting Dog Training has a very knowledgable membership active on its message board. German Shorthair Pointers has an extensive library of gun dog training documents.

So I guess you hunt rabbits with your beagles? Do you use a 22 or a shottie?

How many beagles do you own - 1, more?

I used to have a fox terrier/corgi cross, and he used to be good at finding the bunnies, including crawling down their holes. Had a very good nose on him and then gave chase and voice. Managed to shoot a lot of a rabbits without hitting him!

The best rabbit dog i ever saw was a cross between a beagle and a little terr. The rabbit was lost when she hooked up on them.I use a S&W 1000.I have had has many has 6 but now down to one and looking for a good gyp has we speak.I most of the time use 1 or 2.The rabbit stands a chance

When I got the fox terrier/corgi cross (only reason was the neighbours at the time had pups) I was interested in beagles. But I was a kid at the time and was happy with my dog anyway. He was loyal (or as loyal as he could get, being independently minded).

Whats the normal deal with beagles when hunting. How are they trained? My understanding is that they run around sniffing and looking for rabbits and when they find them, they chase them. Is that simplistic? Or are they supposed to only work within a certain distance of you, and also chase rabbits towards you?

How are earth do you train them to do this? Methods.

Thanks

Well if you get a gun dog and not one of those AKC beagle that the hunt is breed out of them. They find the rabbit and work the track howling. The rabbit runs in a circle and comes most of the time back near where they started. The best way to starty a beagle is to bring them to a rabbit area with lots of rabbits and kick them out for the dog.....matter of time they will start chasing them.....I like to start them with a slow beagle to get them started

I guess the hunting methods are instinctive in the beagles with the right genetics.

I once saw a couple of nice beagles working a field. They were on my farm on a back bush block and working a field looking for rabbits. Their owners were off somewhere over the hill. I didn't know whom the dogs belonged to but enjoyed watching them working.

They found a rabbit and the pair of them worked it really well chasing it. It ran right beside me so I took a shot at it with a 410 shotgun I was carrying. The dogs game an almightly whelp and ran off "back to mother".

Obviously they weren't used to shotguns. I also missed the rabbit as I over compensated not wanting to hit the dogs. Hopefully the owner also didn't think I shot at his dogs (even though he was trespassing).

I do like beagles, if you have any photos in digital form please post them.

Good hunting with your beagles.
