Sorry guys, I haven't got the story right just yet, but I will post it soon. In the meantime, here are a couple of paragraphs about what happened that day, down on the Rukomechi River in the Nyakasanga area of the Zambezi valley.

Dave

Following up on a small group of dagga boys early one morning, PH Peter Wood, Chris Rolfe of South Africa and Pete's trackers Shorty and Rindai, came up on the bulls around midmorning, in seriously dense jesse. After a while spent assessing and inching in closer, an opportunity presented itself. Though it was not an ideal case scenario, Chris had proved himself a capable marksman on a number of occassions and Pete gave him the go ahead. Unfortunately, Chris didn't get it quite right, hitting the chosen bull a little high and a little back, as was later determined.
A tense and meticulous follow-up ensued - rifles gripped firmly at the ready and senses screeching silently. Twice the hunters bumped the wounded bull and it blundered off deeper into the jesse. Visibilty was severely restricted by interwoven scrub and to say the hunters were not happy campers would be an understatement. After what seemed an eternity, the legs of the bull were espied under the brushline about 20 yards ahead, and the hunters tried working their way into a shooting position. The bull broke for the third time, bludgeoning its way through the thick bush and away. Or so the hunters thought, but the bull stopped not far off, and yes, it did circle back. With Shorty at point and on blood, and Pete and Chris scanning the bush ahead, the men proceeded. And then the bull came, crashing through the restrictive vegetation from only about a dozen yards off. Shorty hit the deck and the hunters faced down the enraged bull as it came purposefully on. Chris fired three rapid shots with his .375, hitting the bull in the head each time but failing to stop it. And then Pete came to the party, two bullets from his .458 Lott punching into the bull's head at close range. Pete's first shot was too low, but the second brained the beast not three yards from where the hunters stood shoulder to shoulder. Yes, it was three yards, not eight as I reported in a post yesterday - I spoke with Pete this morning.

PHEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
