One of the old writers on Guns&Ammo, Outdoor Life, American Rifleman, etc., Col. Charles Askins was a fanatic on the 8MM. He wildcatted several 8MM rounds and went straight to Africa to test them out. I think he did 6-8 wildcats with the mandatory trip to Africa IIRC. That's just trips testing his wildcats, Lord knows how many trips he actually went on.
