I found this elsewhere on the web in a reply to questions about a .404

----------
The rifle you refer to is designated the 1905 model Jeffery .404.

They came in 3 models:

The no.3 model; is the base rifle with standard miltary type stock and it was the model issued to most game departments. The rifle cost 12 pounds 12. in 1910/11.

the Model 2 rifle: best quality: 25 pounds.
without seeing your specimen i would venture that this is possibly it.

The model 1 rifle is the plain finish rifle with plain stock cost 15 pounds sterling in 1910.

The early rifles were built on opened M98 mauser actions and the later versions on single square bridge mauser actions. All came from mauser direct as Jeffery was not a gunbuilder but a gun dealer. All were in fact type A mausers. and the sight configuaration on the rifle typical Type A mauser sights.

By looking at the serial number on the underside of the action one can one would be able to trace the Mauser lineage on the action ( markings will show exactly where and when the actions were made by mauser;

however that is as far as it goes as the Jeffery ledgers were partly destroyed during WWII

The actions were supplied by the firm Le Personne, the barrels came from Krupps and the rifles were either finished by Lenord or Taylor.

L. le Personne was a large arms supplier in Leige Belgium. Krupps is self evident as the famous german gun and cannon makers.

H.Lenord was a very large wholesaler and manufacturer from Brimingham.

Taylor was a gunmaker and engraver but not much more is known of him.

Anyone have any other comments?
