Well, here's my set-up.

Ruger #1 in 300 H&H.

The skeletonized factory quarter-rib (q-r) mount was replaced with a Mould's rib which has more Weaver-style mounting slots, sits low on the barrel and doesn't contact the receiver at all (the factory q-r touches the receiver, affecting harmonics when the barrel heats up after a few shots.)

The Moulds contains a dovetail for the factory open sight, which is thankfully a fold-down proposition, but it's presently zeroed for 50yds.

From Brownell's I received and installed a NECG aperture sight that fits the Weaver-style base. I'm still testing it. (NECG also offers one for Ruger's #1s & M77s that fits the grooves in the factory quarter-rib).

If the NECG apertrure doesn't work out, XS Sights (formerly Ashley) offers a low-mount Ghost-Ring "back-up sight" for use on Weaver-type bases.

NECG sells replacement front sights for the #1s & M77s. They come in 5 different heights and sport an easily seen 3/32 white bead. The one on mine works best for the distances I'll be shooting using either the aperture or open sight. (Ideally, I want the aperture zeroed for 2" high at 100yds).

That covers my iron-sight options for any close-in hunting I'm likely to do.

With the aperture off and the factory open sight folded down, my scope is a matte Burris 1.75-5x20mm sitting in low, matte 1" Leupold QRW rings. This set-up puts the scope very low to the barrel and, with the right amount of eye-relief, it comes up quick on the target without rubber necking. The scope is presently zeroed for 275yds, or about 3" high @ 100yds.

I'm still developing loads and such, but this dual set-up of scope and iron sights allows for several options, depending on the distance and terrain conditions involved.

If the scope failed or got damaged, or we were in dense timber or bushveld conditions, I can quickly remove it and go with a pre-sighted, "ghost-ring" peep or open sight.
