Percussion Era Gear Selection?
      04/10/06 05:04 PM

We seem to be discussing the cartidge era on the other thread, now what gear would one choose for the BP era? How many rifles/shotguns should be sufficient? Seems like one would need AT LEAST two of everything in this case (likely more and particularly in the DG calibre).

My minimum battery would consist of....

1) Three eight bore front stuffers with rifling twists that will handle conicals well.

2) Two 20 bore double rifles

3) Two 12 bore double shotguns.

4) Two 20 bore single bbl. pistols.

5) A spare set of locks for each weapon

Obviously one would need to be carrying enough powder and lead to last a long while. I can also imagine it not being easy to find some cool headed gunbearers who will stand in a line and keep passing you loaded single bbl. eight bores while the elephant keeps coming for you! An interesting consideration for you... would one be wise to choose percussion pieces or flint? Half of each? It's gonna be tough to find caps in the 19th century bush but you can always make your own flints. Opinions?

Best,

John
