The place that was hardest to hunt - out of the two I named - was the South African fenced property. Loads of thorn brush, the game was also "wilder" from being harassed more, and we tracked and tracked and followed and followed game, especially the red hartebeest on the property but never scored (on hartebeest that is).

I did enjoy the Zim hunting more though for various reasons.

BUT the point is, just because it was behind wire DIDN'T make it unsporting or less difiicult. In that case the opposite.

I'm not off to WV mate, at least not for sambar. I would head over to NZ if I wanted to get one quicker but in the meantime Vic will do.

If you compare hunting deer at WV to hunting at some of the other free-range pastoral locations in SA, what's the difference? Except for price. That's what gets the goat on a lot of local hunters if you read between the lines. You are 100% right on buff at WV. They are akin to milk cows - read what I have posted previously on them on these forums. I almost walked up to one to take its portrait, completely in the open.

Terrain has a massive influence on the difficulties of hunting any animal. Sambar living in open woodland will be easier. That is why I brought up an elephant back hunt. A lot of the country hunted was open woodland, not the jungle we always imagine in our minds. I would think hunting from an elephant would be in the same league as shooting from the back of a ute, but more wobbly

. But I would not say no if given the chance if it ever happens again.
