My 416 Rigby is coming together
      09/05/06 02:50 AM

After a lot of planning and discussing things with my friend Frikkie, who is also the smith building my rifle, I started buying all the components.

I got a double square bridge action ( it was made in RSA) and the stock blank is Turkish Wallnut. It is being cut out now and the inlets are made for the action. The barrel will be ordered next week and then it will take about 3 - 4 months before I get it.

I prefer a heavy rifle somewhere between 10 and 11 lbs.

We will put a quater rib on the rifle as well.

A couple of questions.
I am thinking of putting express sights and a scope with quick releases on the rifle. My concern is: I am unfortuneately getting older and my arms are way to short for reading without glasses. I have noticed that the rear sight on rifles starts blurring when I aim it, which basicly dictates that I will have to use a scope. I am looking at Leupold scope, VX111 1.75x5x20, VX111x4x20, VX11 2x7x33 VX111 2.5x8x36. The 1x4 x20 have a very short eye relief that basically rules it out. Wiil the 33 and 36 tubes give you so much more light that it outweights it higher low magnification. My idea is to have as small as possible lower magnification to increase my field of view, any comments on this.

I will also install a recoil reducer in the stock. Two types are available in RSA, the mercury ones and the tungsten bead. Which one is the best and why. I do not know the tungston bead ones at all and please correct me if I am wrong, to my knowledge they work with a couple of tungston washers and springs.

The engraving and the checkering will be decided on after the stock is finished. I believe checkering and engraving must compliment the wood. So that part will have to wait a bit.

Anybody with suggestions? It is the first time that I tackle a project like this. I will do most of the work under the guidance of Frikkie.
