look guys, I am not trying to be rude or hostile here. I already had my own opinions before I wrote the post, I just wanted to see what some of you thought. I was not intending to stir up a shitstorm. However some of the responses were quite rude IMHO. When people are rude I tend to be rude back. And I am not touting the 45-70 as an "ideal", "better than...", or anything of the sort. I am jus saying that it will do the job safely, which in my opinion makes it "adequate". As for a bisons' size, I was only stating what I read. It came from a book titled "American Bison a Natural History" written by a man named Jack F. Lott. Maybe he is wrong or maybe your reference is wrong, who knows? I admit that the guar is a quite impressive animal. I am getting the feeling that some hostile feelinga are brewing towards me out there. I wish this were not the case as I harbor none towards anyone on here. I am quite certain that if any of you were to get to know me you would probably find that I agree with you 99% of the time. For example I was watching TV the other day and a man was hunting in Argentine for water buffalo. He used a 338 win mag. I thought to myself this guy is asking for trouble as the animal was enormous and they were within 50 yds and his guide was unarmed. The animal dropped like it had been hit by lightning (a CNS shot). This was quite impressive but you will never hear me reccomend a 338. However a 45-70 uses a large diameter, heavy, well constructed bullet at a moderate velocity. Adequate, nothing more. Also good point about the cost of a rifle being a drop of sand on a beach when compared to the cost of a hunt. As for the invite on a bison hunt, I would love to as long as the invite was friendly and not just to "throw the results in my face". And as I stated in my first post, no I havnt killed a bison. But I would love to. And the style of hunting you describe sounds very nice to me. I do own a Marlin in 45-70 and I like it very much. I do consider it the ultimate close range NORTH AMERICAN combo, but as I stated, in Africa it is merely adequate. Anyways let's see if we can express our opinions in a friendly way here, even if some of us dont exactly see eye to eye.
