.300 WinM. barrel-length

The good old .300HH case is to long

for the action I am looking at. So I wonder if I should go for .300WinMag., with bullet weight 200-220.
Can one use a 23"/57cm barrel in .300WinMag.? I am worried that the shorter barrel will increase the blast to much.
