Christer

I live in the Barossa Valley near Adelaide in South Australia. On a map look at the centre both East/West and North/South. Directly down to the South coast there are some bumps (peninsulas). About there.

Local hunting is mainly small game: foxes, rabbits, hares, ducks (when there is a season); sometimes quail. Feral birds such as pigeons. I also shoot some native birds, not for meat such as galahs as pest destruction on my farm. They eat fruit, grapes, crops etc. Good practice for ducks a month or two later.

There are also roos nearby which can't be hunted for sporting purposes as they are protected but can be harvested under permit or shot under pest destruction permits if the landowner has one.

There are some fallow deer nearby but they move around quite a lot and you need to be there at the right time and find the right animal. I also hunt occasionally hunt fallow deer as part of a deer hunting club that I belong too.

Other hunting can be obtained by travelling some distance. And Australia is a BIG place. I have hunted feral goats in the North of the Flinders Ranges - about 700 - 800 kms North - 8 - 9 hours driving. Pigs in Western/Central NSW. Deer such as Sambar (still trying for a good one) and Hog deer (got a good one of these) in the Eastern half of the state of Victoria.

Sambar is a great animal to hunt and is probably the premier trophy from Australia. Buffalo and Banteung are grand trophies but sambar taken free range are just a lot of hard hunting. They are also good as there is large areas of alpine and sub-alpine forest that is open to public hunting. Most Australian hunting is on private land and you need to know the owner to get access. Or pay for it directly, or through an outfitter or similar.

Traditionally hunting in Australia has been closer to shooting. Shooting large numbers of feral game such as goats, pigs, rabbits. Often with next to no meat recovery. Often using a spotlight and a utility (pick-up). It is still possible to shoot large numbers like this but it is becoming rarer (thankfully) as game achieves a market value - sale of live feral goats to Arabia for meat, sale of feral pork to Germany for human consumption etc.

Will send you an email.
