There are more attacks from nearby and in the Indian parks where tiger and leopard still live than we ever hear about. Not surprising considering the encroachment on the parks for cutting firewood, poaching, cropping inside etc. Plus I don't think the cats know the meaning of an unfenched boundary.

Near another park I read once of the villagers wearing "face-masks" on the back of their heads. As anyone who has read Corbett will know, Corbett discussed that tiger especially will usually only attack upwind, thinking humans will scent them as deer or antelope would. Also they will usually attack from ambush or behind, thus the wearing of a face mask on the rear of the head to confuse the cats and hopefully prevent an attack. Examples of modern "Janus"'.
