If you do a search on the subject, recoil reducers have been convered a couple of times in the past. Recoil reducers are usually 1/2# to 1# depending on maker. RR's are stainless steel tubes that are filled with mercury and several ball bearings, then sealed to keep them from leaking. They do work.

BTW they inserted in the buttstock and glassed in.
