I am also talking about the issue of getting close to what they did back at the turn of the century (cordite era) in respect to bullet design, *and* being kind to the guns.
I am not saying that all woodleigh bullets are bad. I will say that I have no brand loyalty. I'm not saying I wouldn't or won't use woodleigh products. I will say that there are some of thier bullets I won't use in guns that I have. I have said that a particular Woodleigh bullet available to me here in the states doesn't seem to be as good as a Hornady bullet I found for my (and this part of things is a bit off topic) BPE rifle.
Here is the reason why.
Hornady on left, Woodleigh on right. Both of those bullets are 350gr SNRN bullets, both have had thier noses milled flat and lead hardness tests have been performed on both bullets. The Hornady has a thinner, elemental copper jacket, the Woodleigh bullet has a guilding metal alloy jacket that is tougher, harder, and thicker than the Hornady bullet. The lead in the Hornady bullet tested softer too.
To simply adhere to the suggestion or advice that says "Woodleigh bullets are the only/best choice for shooting in old doubles because they follow the period design..." wouldn't be the best thing one could do for themselves or thier rifles. I tend to look much further into things than 'just what the boys say...' before I choose or reject some component or another.
From what I've seen, the Woodleigh Solids have thicker and more massive steel jackets than the original period bullets did. It wouldn't suprise me if I were to find out that the jacket alloy was different than cordite era bullets had too. I don't know if McDonald is using softer or harder steel in his jackets. Simply looking at the sectional views I've seen of his modern production/cordite era pattern solid bullets though, it would seem that they are tougher by way of having more steel in the way of the rifling's engraving.
That's all I meant to say about brand loyalty and bullet selection in the above post. No mudslinging intended, just someting I'd found on my way to choosing a 350gr SNRN jacketed bullet for my Tolley BPE gun, where I found the Woodleigh bullets were (for my purposes) not the thing to stick with in light of a different manufacturer's offering which in type, weight, and profile looked very similar, and after much closer inspection looked better for my gun.
