Considering it primary design was to take out a terrorist through the window of a 747
and it goes through a 1/2" steel plate at 1000 yards, I would call it overkill.

Unless you want to shoot game at 600 + yards from a sitting bench rest
I would leave the 338 Lapua.

The guns I've handled are heavy and recoil at the high end of tolerance.

I think better cartridges are available.

Specs of 338 Lapua are in COTW and vrtually every Military mag going.

500 Nitro

PS - Plus if you want to travel OS with it you may start finding problems
caused solely by the calibre.
