The elk was shot by my hunting partner, though I did put a 300 grainer from my 375 into it so it would not get to the deep stuff. Mike was using a 200 grain NP in a 8mm Rem Mag and though it ultimately got the job done, I think 250 grain bullets would have been better. We deboned the elk and put it into canvas game bags; I will never again pack out moose or elk quarters, or even deer for that matter. Most people here quarter and pack. That elk probably weighed 700-750 lbs, though they can get up to be 900lbs. We were hunting by boat, so the truck was nowhere near the spot. All the blood in the water attracted Dolly Varden. Next time I'll bring my fishing rod.
