131,000 to 160,000 elephant in Botswana's wild lands is way too many. I remember the population as 100,000. The area between Zimbabwe and Botswana, had a lot of elephant travelling to and fro.

Botswana is acruch cattle country, and the cattle lands would not be as available to elephants.

The Okavango is a great inland wetlands, rich in wildlife. I spent a couple days wild camping on an island in the middle of the Park, walking and boating. Believe it or not, nonguns for protection at all. Survived.

The Okavango, Chobe and other lands represent great areas for wildlife. But if there are way way too many eleohants, the deforestation is tremendous. And rich forest lands are turned into endless lopped off bare tree trunks. And not much else. In 1994 I saw the Western Hwange/Wankie National Park had endless areas exactly like this, Forty years ago! What's it like now?

The western boundary of Hwange Park is the Botswana border. That border track/road in the Northern section was a great place for game drives in 2001.
