There are a lot of powders in the medium burn rate range.
What to do is to look at actual load data where both are used and see the difference, not at burn rate charts. Using the charts for load data is a poor idea.
Some powders produce more energy than others - THAT can get you into trouble.
If we look at Hodgdon's data for the 8x57, we see max loads:
180gr.Barnes TSX - Varget - 47.8gr. - 2,570
------------------ H4895 - 46.6gr. - 2,565
200gr. Speer SP - Varget - 47.5gr. - 2,511
------------------ H4895 - 45.4gr. - 2,524
220gr. Hornady SP- Varget - 46.8gr. - 2,390
------------------ H4895 - 45.2gr. - 2,420
I just remembered some years back in my brother's 9.3x57, he had Varget instead of H4895. IIRC, we used 46gr. with the 286gr. Norma Alaskan RN. It was
just under 2,200fps. & was accurate as he could smack 50, 100, 150 and 200meter 14"x 16" AR500 plates standing with 4 consecutive shots and he was happy
with that.
This is his moose load, in my old 9.3x57.
I keep thinking I need to purchase another one of those, but would like to try one on a 98 action just to see what it would do. I know it will match 9.3x62 data from 1930 (286gr. @ 2,340fps) as the 9.3x57 will easily beat 2,200fps in a Model 96.
BTW, www.intersurplus.com (the old tradeexcanada) has a whack of 9.3x62's on 96 Husky actions, rechambered from 9.3x57's as well as .30/06's on those same 96 Husky actions.
