Back in 1978, guide and outfitter Igor S. carried an 8x57 as backup, loaded with 225gr. Speer RN's. Worked on a grizzly that charged them from uphill. The charge stopped on the 4th shot with the bear turning sideways to receive the 5th shot through both shoulders. Might have been one miss, but Igor noted the frontal chest shots, 1st 2 or 3 had zero effect. I was near camp with the other client in a tree stand when this happened but heard the shots echoing through the valley. There was some VERY fast shooting going on from Igor's 8mm. The client, emptied his 7MM Rem. Mag's magazine out onto the ground working the bolt over and over while thinking he was shooting the bear. Weird, quite stressful situation for him, I guess. I thought I remembered his load as being 54gr. IMR4350 and vel. of 2,450fps. We also got 6 1/2 and 7 foot black bears that trip, quite large for the area.
