As for why, I have a chopped up '96 hunting rifle. Someone has cut the military barrel and given it a nice crown. The stock forend has been cut down, the bolt has been bent, and the receiver has been drilled and tapped for scope mounts. It has become one of "Bubba's" hunting rifles. I bought it in this condition. Overall whoever did the damage did a good job, and it makes a nice hunting rifle.

It isn't a "bubbaed" up rifle. It's how they were sold commercially. M38 Swedish Mausers had their military stocks forends cut shorter. Bolt bent. Action tapped for mounts. Or M96 full length barrel Mil rifles with the barrel shortened.

Sold cheaply as an excellent very cheap superbly accurate hunting rifle. In 6.5x55, far better and more accurate than the much later 6.5 Creedmoor wannabes. Cost $100 or $400 not $4000.

I disagree with Marrakai. Thousands were sold with the cut back Mil stock. Or the full length long M96 originals. That Monte Carlo stock is an after market modification. .

My rifle merely has had a cheap plastic stock swapped for the cut back Mil stock.

A new trigger would be great. And a different safety.

Unless I win lotto, I won't customise mine. I bought it as a knock about and loaner rifle.

However with the original FMJ natch "ex mil" ammo, mine shoots three shot one hole groups. Even with the heavy trigger.

Yours will make a nice customised rifle.
