Suggestion, use cold tap water for cleaning John. no need for soap.
This was written up by Holland and Holland to a friend of mine who had them "refurbish" a 6 bore SxS caplock ball and shot gun. This info was in a personal letter to him.
Ballistol is water soluble. That should tell you it is not a rust preventative.
Some guys use it for a target patch lube @ 10:1 mix water to Balistol.
Ordinary Neetsfoot oil makes a decent patch lube for hunting.
Remove the nipples, take the barrel off the stock and dip the breech end into a bucket of cool or cold water for cleaning.
Using a jag on a rod, pump water in and out of the tubes, 15 to 20 strokes each bore. This "action" of forcing water into and out of the bores will nicely clean the patent breeches/channels of fouling.
Remove the locks for cleaning. Make sure you clean the inside of the cups on the hammers.
Failure to remove the barrels for cleaning will result in those areas not better cleaned properly.
After drying, I spray WD40 into the tubes, then patch that out. Again, BALISTOL will not prevent rusting. It is water soluble.
Both my brother and fiend Ron rusted their guns overnight when using Balistol for a final 'oiling' after cleaning. The humidity was high both instances.
After drying the gun with patches, lube the bore with a good gun oil. Hoppe's #9 powder solvent is actually a great rust preventative, even better than their gun oil.
My .58 Pedersoli SxS shot best with 100 to 110gr. 2F and a patched ball.
In mine, 100gr. shot both tubes into the same group. 110gr. shot parallel (neatsfoot oil lube, same as a water based lube).
90gr. crossed(diverged) and 120gr. crossed(diverged).
Forgot to mention, .562" pure lead ball and 10 ounce 100% cotton denim (.021") Pure cotton ticking, same thickness will also work well.
