I will simply add that IMHO the most elegant shotguns ever built were top-lever hammer. Add island locks and ejectors, and you have the absolute pinnacle to my taste.
The fact that almost all such guns have James Purdey on the locks is unfortunate: unless in complete road-kill condition I will never be able to afford one!

For double rifles, top-lever hammerless is clearly the best. Fastest to operate on dangerous game, and although arguably not as strong as a Jones underlever, the screw-grip version of Scott's spindle with Purdey under-bolts is widely acknowledged as plenty strong enough!

So yeah, top-lever for sure.
