As a young lad, I was brought up in the Kumaon hills of India, at the foothills of the Himalayas. I spent virtually every non school day, stalking the Deodar forests, with my Hornet 22, in company with an old shikari, my mentor. From him I learnt about the art of taking the spoor of an animal, the need for patience, shot placement and the respect for ones quarry.

We shot mainly barking deer, ghooral and the axis deer.

My love for hunting and being in the countryside was deeply ingrained at an early stage.

Geoff/Mpofu joined as a member in January 2003, a very early member.

I've been chatting with Geoff about his younger days, note the "I was brought up in the Kumaon hills of India, at the foothills of the Himalayas". The names of the places are right out of a James Corbett man-eater novel.

I've planned to visit the foothills of the Himalayas for a long time. A Corbett pilgrimage. And a tourist shikar to Corbett National Park. It was winter when I was in India last time, so too cold for the alpine Far North. But a visit to these places is very much on my travel wish list. My wife was investigating Southern India as a future holiday destination this week, whenever it's possible. But North and South, seasonally, don't mix.

Geoff has been supplying some family historical photos and comments, which I hope to display in the near future. British ancestors in India from at least his grandfather's days and old hunting images.

Looking forward to looking at them.
