John a fantastic map of British India . I recall seeing similar maps when I was at primary school. The hunting must have been fabulous . I guess it is no fluke that the new Rigby box lock double is called the Shikari. My guess is far more British double rifles and high end bolt action rifles went to India rather than Africa before WW2. In my small collection all the big bore doubles came from India as did a few of the magazine rifles.

I am constantly amazed by how many really nice British double rifles are owned here in OZ. Sadly I came in rather late so no bargains for me.

No bargains for me either for my three British double rifles. But hopefully worth more now than what I paid for them.

Hundreds of more came to Australia from India. After the were banned there. As cheap as $1000 to $3000. Then shipped by profiteers to the USA. We had one guy on here wh claimed to have over thirty. Was selling them overseas. Some drs purchased for $3000 to $8000, may have been selling for $60,000 to $90,000 a few resales later in the USA. Mickey on NE had a .369 Purdey. Wwe tracked it through three or four sales and it's price kept adding up.

On buying, people with $$$ available might get some deals out of WA at the moment.

Regarding historical hunting, before going to Thailand, I thought I'd look up what hunting opportunities there were in a hunting encyclopaedia ... WOW! Elephant, rhino, tiger, leopard, bovines, deer ... Then I thought I thought "what is the publishng date?" "Original publishing date...1967.". Oh well, one can dream ...
