IIRC, a grizzly shot in Alaska within 15 mines of the coast or ocean, is a brown bear. If over 15 miles the grizzly is called a grizzly. Phil or others from Alaska could verify or correct this statement.

Many people, some Americans, sometimes others will call a brown-phase black bear, a brown bear, although this is not correct.

We also have white & cinnamon (more blondish) phase black bears. The white ones are called "Kermody or Kermodies" & have nothing to do with polar bears.
