Yes, In modern vocabulary usage they are the same cartridge. The term "Long Colt" was an expression that individuals used to differentiate between the .45 Colt and the .45 Schofield as both the cartridges were in common use at the time. Both would fit in the Colt Peacemaker….the "Long Colt", as they dubbed it, would not fit in the Schofield revolver.
The original 1873 was not chambered in .45 Colt, mostly due to the very small rim on those original cartridges. There was simply not enough rim for the extractor to reliably hold on to. - Mike
