Yep the .458 Win Mag in practice and in actual use developed a bad reputation precisely because of the inadequacy of the sub 2000 fps velocities. As a DG cartridge it nearly died. With new powders a resurgence.

Yet the .45/70 with even less velocity is so effective ...

I think I will have to try my .577/450 sporting rifle on buffalo!
