Vintage Type B Oberndorf Mauser sporters in 7x57 or 8x57 may be significantly cheaper than British stalking rifles by 'big ticket' makers (or Mauser's own Type A variants for that matter) and can be a real pleasure to own and hunt with.
Main thing to watch out for is bore condition, pretty much everything else can be fixed, or tolerated to some degree.
I know this is a short answer but one could write a book on the subject!
