Classic Custom Mausers by 1950-60's Anthony Guymon
      05/02/20 11:22 PM

Hello All,

I acquired this rifle in 2014. ... Its a Custom Rifle from a maker that I had not heard of until I purchased this rifle. I learned that Apparently Anthony Guymon was in business from approx. 1948 - 1963.

As you can see, Custom Rifles back then, were very fancy so everyone could instantly recognize that it was a "Custom" rifle.

When I searched this forum, I didn't find any references to Anthony Guymon so I'd be interested to know if anyone has any custom rifles from this maker.

I bought this rifle at a local Gun Show from the original owner who was 78 years. He had the rifle built for him in 1960 while he was stationed in Seattle, Washington, serving in the Navy as part of a Submarine crew. He was originally from Clintonville, Wisconsin. After his tour he returned to Wisconsin and hunted with the rifle every year for the next 53 years, up until the year 2013 and sold the rifle to me the following year. He told me that he never took the rifle into the field on days when it rained. That explains its MINT condition. He sold me the rifle with the original Guymon Leather sling, the original Guymon Gun Case w/ Hand Tooled Leather Trim, and the original 29 page Anthony Guymon catalog from his 1960 order. Inside the catalog he wrote the prices for all the options he wanted - the total price he paid in 1960 was $335.90. That was a lot of money in 1960 and the 1960 - 2020 dollar equivalent calculator says its $2916.13 in today's dollars.

As always, your comments are welcome.

Here are the particulars:

1960 Anthony Guymon Custom Rifle, Bremerton, Washington
"Custom Streamliner Featherweight" model w/ blind mag - 4-shot (3+1)
280 Remington Caliber
22" Douglas Barrel - 1:11 twist
FN Mauser Action
Buehler safety
Dayton Traiser Trigger
"Kings Quality" Fiddleback Maple Stock
Ebony Grip Cap & Forend Tip
Pachmayr Butt Plate w/ Lightning-Bolt Spacer
Redfield 1-3/4-5x Scope
Guymon Leather sling
13-3/8" LOP - 8 1/4 lbs w/ scope & sling

And here's another Anthony Guymon Custom rifle.

You may have seen my posts in the Classifieds looking to buy a "Brevex Mauser". I've been collecting Brevex rifles for quite some time and have 8 in my collection.

Mark, one of my friends here in Wisconsin, knew that I collected Brevex Mausers rifles. The weekend before last he put me onto this one. Mark is a big time Weatherby collector, and found this rifle while searching for vintage Weatherbys. It was in an obscure Ohio Auction that was not listed with proxibid. Although Mark knew nothing of the rifle's maker, and no reference was made in the Auction description, I immediately recognized the distinctive stock profile as that of an Anthony Guymon Custom creation. With only a day to go, I quickly jumped in and bid. It went ridiculously reasonable.

This is another Custom Anthony Guymon rifle from the 1950's. As you can see, the Guymon Catalog listed Brevex actions as one of their special offerings, and this is one of them. It has a heavy-duty Laminated stock and a period Weatherby Factory barrel in 257 Weatherby Magnum caliber. It came with a Unertl 2" scope, a hand-tooled leather sling, and a custom Bi-Pod and Tail-Drag, both of which are bolt-on and adjustable as you can see them in place in the last photos of the rifle.

In looking over this custom build, I realized that a 257 Weatherby Magnum is not the caliber of choice for typical benchrest shooting which is conducted at ranges of 100, 200, and 300 yards. Therefore, this rifle must have been built especially for long-range 1000 yard benchrest matches.

Its always fun to discover a classic builder from the "Golden Age" of Custom Mausers.
