The Artillary Luger or Lange Pistole 08 was formally adopted by the armies of Prussia, Saxony and Wurttemberg in June 1913. The pistol was to be used by non-commissioned officers and men of the infantry and artillery munitions columns to replace their revolvers.

The pistol could be used with a board-type shoulder stock and although the claimed accuracy at 600 metres was a bit optimistic, it was certainly preferred to the bolt action carbine, being shorter and semi-automatic. It appears to have been a natural progression from the shorter barrelled P08 to aid accuracy at extended ranges and so would have been used to complement longarm conflict situations.
