Larcher, To each his own, but shots in Africa are most always withing 300 yards, and I assure you a 7x57 is capable at those modest ranges, it has never let me down in my long throated Brno M-21 with a long throat so I can seat bullets out and shoot 160 gr. bullets at 2900 or 175s at 2650 FPS. It has killed Eland, Kudu, even a couple of buffalo, its probably a touch of purism, and nostalgia, but mostly that I have used it so much, it has my confidence...I still believe big calibers are used as a poor excuse for poor shooting in many cases, a gut shot Eland will travel far hit with a 375 or a 7x57...A heart shot Eland will die fast with a 375 or a 7x57..
I reserve my 375, 416, 404, 10.75x68 and .479 N.E. for Tanzania plainsgame, where I just might stumble into something mean....but I have no problem with using any of them for plainsgame if it blows your skirt up, they certainly work and don't bruise a lot of meat like a .270 or 300 will...
