I was re-reading the account of George Grey's fatal lion encounter with a .280 Ross. There is no mention of bullets or ammo, but I suppose he was using expanding bullets that broke up badly on impact when he fired - first at 25 yards, then at 5 yds. There is no mention of where the bullets struck either, probably because the lion was shot up by Grey's hunting companions immediately afterward and all thoughts were on trying to save Grey. No one was interested in a post mortem on the lion, understandably.

Assuming the shots struck the lion in the head or face, do you suppose a 7x57 with 175 grain solids would have done the job? If not, then what would have? Just curious to know the thinking on this one. I personally think two accurate strikes with 7x57 solids would have saved Grey's life.
