Phil

Welcome to NitroExpress.com

If you are heading off to Africa ask your PH but I doubt any PH would say no to a .375. Some say they prefer a .400 and up for elephant and buffalo. But a client shooting a .375 well is much better than one shooting a 458 badly.

I was just a client but I used a .375 for my one and only buff and had no doubts at all a .375 could do it with 300 gr or heavier Woodleigh bullets. I shot the buff with a SP broadside and it was still standing but not well. As it was getting dark, about 30 seconds later I shot it again through both shoulders with a FMJ. It ran about 40 metres and became very wobbly and fell over. Still took several more minutes to die but I think it would be the same with almost all big bores.

Harry Manners, a professional ivory hunter in Mozambiique used one or two .375s for all his ivory hunting, after being dis-satisfied with a 10.75x68. Read "Kambaku" - a great book and one of my favourites.

And as for a charge, a 300gr .375 FMJ will out penetrate may other heavier projectiles and all it takes is one bullet to the brain. Same for the heavier calibres.

Can I ask why the question - planning a safari soon or in the future?
